I have struggled with acne since I was a teenager and always found that SPFs broke me out and made my skin look oily. Little did I know that I was just using the wrong product!
I’ve gathered 6 fantastic face sunscreens that all work well under makeup, leave no white cast, are suitable for oily skin and acne prone skin; so they won’t break you out or leave your skin oily throughout the day.
Why should I use SPFs every day?
You should use a sunscreen every day, ideally SPF30 or SPF50, even during winter time. UV rays affect your skin throughout the year, even when you’re indoors next to a window. UV rays is the most significant cause of skin ageing and thus SPF is the single most beneficial anti-ager on the market. An SPF will also protect your skin from skin cancer and help decrease the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
How much should I use?
When applying sunscreen, remember to use enough product for it to offer the protection stated on the bottle. For your face, neck and ears, the recommended amount of product is 1/2 teaspoon, and for face only, it’s 1/4 teaspoon. SPF should be reapplied every 2 hours, especially if you’re in direct sunlight.
Which SPF is best for me?
Krave Beauty Beet the Sun SPF50
A Kbeauty cult favourite which has received a lot of hype on social media in the last year, and let me tell you, it’s definitely worth the hype! This is a lovely, gel texture SPF which doesn’t leave any white cast and absorbs beautifully. It leaves a dewy finish, so if your skin is particularly oily, you might find that you don’t need a moisturiser underneath this.
You can purchase it on Barefection here.
Keep Cool Soothe Bamboo Essence SPF50
Another Korean SPF favourite with a more matte finish. This product has more of a classic SPF texture as well, but I find that it leaves no white cast as soon as it has absorbed and might work better for you if your skin is extremely oily.
You can purchase it on Stylevana here.
Thank You Farmer Light Sun Essence SPF50
This is my current favourite and is designed for oily skin. If you have dry skin, they have one for you as well! This is very lightweight and a beautiful gel texture. It does have a light smell but makes up for it by not leaving a white cast and works very well under makeup. This one is similar to the Krave Beauty one in that it has a dewy finish, so you might not need a moisturiser underneath.
Evy Technology Daily Defence Face Mousse SPF50
A very unique SPF as it’s a mousse texture rather than a cream. It was initially designed for those with sensitive skin and eczema, so if that’s you, this is a safe bet! I find it works well for oily skin too as it absorbs in record time and gives a true matte finish. Apply a golf ball size in the palm of your hands and rub it slightly between your hands so the mousse breaks into more of a liquid texture before applying to your face. It might look shocking at first; it looks like it’ll leave a white cast but it really doesn’t! Trust the process with this one.
You can purchase it directly from Evy Technology here.
La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Light Invisible Fluid Sun Cream SPF50
Another cult classic, and this is so easily accessible too! This is a very thin texture; it’s almost liquid and is extremely lightweight on the skin. This is also suitable for sensitive skin and absorbs beautifully. I always come back to this one! It works well under makeup, doesn’t leave a white cast and feels like nothing on the skin; all boxes ticked! It also comes in a tinted version, which I enjoy during the summer if I want to go makeup free. As a bonus, it’s often on offer at Boots, FeelUnique and LookFantastic – so keep an eye out.
You can find it on Amazon here.
Garnier Ambre Solaire Super UV Anti Dark Spots & Anti Pollution Face Fluid SPF50
This is the most affordable SPF on my list and it’s a brilliant one! The texture is very similar to the La Roche Posay; a thin fluid that leaves no white cast. It’s not a matte SPF, but it’s not a dewy either – somewhere in between and therefore perfect for oily skin.
You can find it on Amazon here.
